Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is inviting online applications for Combined Stenographer Grade C/ D Exam 2026, to fill up 731 permanent Stenographer posts across various Ministries and Departments. The last date to apply is 15-05-2026. The role involves stenography work such as transcription, documentation, and administrative support in government offices, requiring proficiency in shorthand and typing skills.

Pay Level-6 (₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400)

The starting salary is expected to be around ₹58,000, subject to variation based on applicable allowances and posting location.

Stenographer Grade ā€˜D’ 18 to 27 years

Pay Level-6 (₹25,500 – ₹81,100)

The starting salary is expected to be around ₹42,000 (may vary based on rate of allowances and posting location)

    • Grade C: Born between 02-08-1996 and 01-08-2008
    • Grade D: Born between 02-08-1999 and 01-08-2008

  • Candidates from all states may apply.
  • Qualification (12th) must be completed by 01-08-2026.
  • Selected Candidates shall be on probation for a period of 2 years.

Selection Process

The selection process for the Stenographer Grade C/ D Exam 2026 will be conducted in the following stages:

Computer Based Examination

The first stage will be a Computer Based Examination consisting of objective type multiple choice questions.

  • Questions will be in both English and Hindi.
  • Negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on marks.
  • Minimum qualifying marks: UR – 30%, OBC/EWS – 25%, Others – 20%.
Examination Centres

Candidates must select three preferred centres:

  • Central Region: Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Agra, Bareilly, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut
  • Northern Region: Delhi, Bikaner, Jaipur, Udaipur, Sikar, Dehradun, Haldwani, Roorkee
  • Western Region: Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Surat, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Panaji
  • Other Regions: Eastern, Southern, North Eastern, MPR, KKR, NWR regions

 

Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates shortlisted from the Computer Based Examination will appear for the Skill Test, which is qualifying in nature.

  • Dictation of 10 minutes in English or Hindi.
  • Grade C: 100 words per minute.
  • Grade D: 80 words per minute.

Document Verification

The final stage will be Document Verification (DV), conducted after declaration of results.

  • Original 12th mark sheets and certificates required.
  • Identity proof and category certificates must be presented.
  • Final selection based on CBT merit + Skill Test qualification.

Fee Structure :

Applicable application fee is to be paid online. Fee structure is -

  • General / OBC / EWS: ₹100/-
  • SC / ST / Women / Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) / Ex-Servicemen Candidates: No Fee

How to Apply :

Application process for Stenographer Exam 2026 is similar to other exams conducted by SSC. Follow the steps below -

  1. Complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the SSC website if not already done.
  2. Login using registration credentials and select the Stenographer Grade ā€˜C’ & ā€˜D’ Examination 2026.
  3. Fill the online application form carefully with personal, educational, and other required details.
  4. Capture live photograph as per instructions (clear face, no cap/spectacles, proper lighting).
  5. Upload scanned signature in JPG/JPEG format (10–20 KB, approx. 6.0 cm Ɨ 2.0 cm). Upload required documents as applicable.
  6. Preview the application form and verify all details before final submission.
  7. Pay the application fee online (if applicable) by 16-05-2026.
  8. Submit the application form on or before 15-05-2026 (11 PM).
  9. Take a printout of the application form for future reference. No need to send it to Staff Selection Commission at this stage.
  10. If needed, make corrections in the application form between 20-05-2026 to 21-05-2026 by paying correction charges (Rs 200 for first correction and Rs 500 for 2nd correction).
