| Project Name | Characterization of Circulating Microplastics in Gastro-intestinal (GI) Cancers: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study on Environment–Cancer Interface |
| Project Description | This pioneering medical research project investigates the "environment-cancer interface" by examining the presence and impact of circulating microplastics in the human body. As plastic pollution becomes pervasive, this study specifically targets patients with Gastro-intestinal (GI) cancers to determine if these microscopic synthetic particles are present in the bloodstream and tumor tissues. The research involves high-precision characterization techniques (like Raman Spectroscopy or Micro-FTIR) to identify the polymer types and sizes of microplastics. By linking environmental exposure to oncological pathology, the project seeks to provide pilot data on whether microplastics act as carriers for carcinogens or induce chronic inflammation leading to malignancy. It is funded by the Uttarakhand Manav Seva Samiti Delhi (UKMSSD). |
