UPSC Recruitment 2026 Combined Defence Services Examination (I) 451 Posts Online Application

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is inviting online applications for permanent and short service commission posts through the Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2026 for a total of 451 vacancies. Eligible candidates must submit their applications on or before 30-12-2025 after carefully ensuring compliance with the prescribed eligibility conditions.

This recruitment is conducted for officer-level entry into the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Officers’ Training Academy, where selected candidates will undergo military training and subsequently serve in commissioned roles across the defence services.

Mode of Recruitment :

The selection process will consist of a Written Examination, Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview, Medical Examination, and preparation of the final merit list.

Written Examination

The written examination will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission in offline mode. The examination structure for Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy will be the same and candidates will be required to qualify in all papers as prescribed.

Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview

Candidates who qualify in the written examination will be called for the Services Selection Board interview. The SSB interview will be conducted in two stages to assess intelligence, personality traits, leadership qualities, and suitability for commissioning into the armed forces.

  • Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating tests and Picture Perception and Description Test
  • Stage II: Psychological Tests, Group Testing Officer tasks, and Personal Interview

Medical Examination

Candidates recommended by the Services Selection Board will undergo a medical examination to verify physical and medical fitness as per the standards prescribed by the respective defence services.

Final Merit List

The final merit list will be prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the written examination and the Services Selection Board interview. Final selection will be made strictly in order of merit, subject to medical fitness, availability of vacancies, and fulfillment of all eligibility conditions.

Written Examination

The written examination will have two papers as prescribed:

SSB

Stage I of SSB test will include the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Tests and the Picture Perception & Description Test (PP&DT). Candidates will be shortlisted based on combined performance in these components. Candidates selected in Stage I will go through Stage II, which will include the Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference. These tests will be conducted over four days and will assess Officer-like Qualities holistically.

Final Merit

The final merit will be prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Written Examination and the Services Selection Board Tests. Allocation to Army, Navy, Air Force or Naval Academy will be made according to merit, eligibility, medical fitness and the preferences submitted by the candidate.

Applicable application fee is to be paid online. Fee structure is -

  • Rs 100 for all candidates except exempted categories
  • No fee for SC / ST / Female candidates
  • No fee for Wards of JCOs/NCOs/ORs studying in Military Schools or Sainik Schools

Mode of Recruitment :

The selection process for these posts will consist of shortlisting of applications, a Recruitment Test (if conducted), and an Interview, in the order decided by the Commission.

Shortlisting of Applications

All applications will be screened based on the information provided by candidates in their online application forms. Shortlisting will be carried out by the Commission using criteria such as desirable qualifications, higher educational qualifications, higher relevant experience, or a combination of these factors. Mere fulfillment of essential qualifications will not automatically entitle a candidate to be called for the next stage.

Recruitment Test (If Conducted)

The Commission may conduct a Recruitment Test to restrict the number of candidates for interview if the number of applications is large. The Recruitment Test will be used as a screening mechanism and candidates will be required to secure the minimum level of suitability fixed by the Commission for their respective category to qualify for the interview stage.

Interview

Candidates shortlisted after screening or after the Recruitment Test will be called for an Interview. The interview will carry a total of 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks in the interview will be 50 marks for UR category, 45 marks for OBC category, and 40 marks for SC, ST, and PwBD categories. Final selection will be based on performance in the interview or on combined performance in the Recruitment Test and Interview, as applicable.
