    1. Mar 30 is observed by UN as International Day of Zero Waste, observed since 2023.
      1. Notably, Humans generate an estimated 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, of which only 55 % is managed in controlled facilities. Every year, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems.
      2. Mar 30 is also statehood day of State of Rajasthan, established on Mar 30, 1949.
    2. Adani Group began first phase of its Kutch Copper unit at Mundra (Gujarat), as world’s largest single-location copper manufacturing plant, to help cut India’s dependence on imports and aid energy transition.
      1. 1st phase will produce 0.5 million tonnes a year, expected to achieve full-scale 1 million tonne capacity by FY29 (March 2029).
    3. Book Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI, by Indian-British journalist Madhumita Murgia has been shortlisted for inaugural Women's Prize for Non-Fiction.

    4. French mathematician Michel Talagrand has been named winner of Abel Prize 2024.
      1. It is awarded annually by King of Norway to outstanding mathematician(s), regarded as mathematics world's Nobel Prize equivalent.
      2. Named after Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel, it carries monetary award of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (Approx .7 USD).
    5. Himachal Pradesh govt announced to launch Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojna, to provide monthly financial support of Rs 1500 to women aged between 18 to 60 years.

    1. Expert Committee on developing Gujarat International Finance Tech-City International Financial Services Centre (GIFT IFSC) as Global Finance and Accounting Hub has submitted its report to IFSCA Chairperson.
      1. It was headed by Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal (President of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India).
    2. India and USA held Bilateral Tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Amphibious Exercise Tiger Triumph 2024.
      1. Harbour Phase of the exercise was held at Visakhapatnam, with Sea phase held later.
    3. Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) received $24.5 million grant from Green Climate Fund (GCF) for its anchored project Avaana Sustainability Fund (ASF), valued at $120 million.
      1. Incheon (South Korea) based GCF is a pivotal component of Paris Agreement, as world's largest climate fund.
      2. GCF was established within framework of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to assist developing countries with climate change adaptation and mitigation activities.
    4. Tamil Nadu govt launched Neengal Nalama initiative (meaning Are you fine? in English), as a beneficiary outreach program aimed at reviewing implementation of govt's flagship schemes and addressing grievances of the public.
    5. IndusInd Bank launched contactless payments wearables named PayWear, as India's first All-in-One tokenizable wearables for debit / credit cards, on Mastercard platform.
      1. It will allow users to tokenize their credit / debit card onto a chip-enabled wearable device, to facilitate swift transactions at any contactless Point-of-Sale (PoS) terminal across globe.
      2. The three versatile wearables, i.e. ring, watch clasp, and stickers, cater to diverse preferences of customers, with price ranging 499 to 2999.

      1. LAMITIYE means Friendship in Creole language.
    2. Mar 28 is observed globally as Universal Acceptance (UA) Day, with 2024 flagship event held at Belgrade (Serbia).
      1. It was first observed by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG) on Mar 28, 2023.

    5. Bloomberg announced inclusion of Indian G-Securities in its Emerging Market (EM) Local Currency Government Index and related indices from January 31, 2025. It will bring down borrowing costs for the government.
      1. Indian Fully Accessible Route (FAR) bonds will be included in the Bloomberg EM Local Currency Government indices, with an initial weight of 10 % of their full market value. This is likely to result in inflows of around USD 3 billion into domestic debt.
      2. More inflows will come into debt market due to inclusion of G-Secs by JPMorgan in its Government Bond Index-Emerging Markets (GBI-EM) from June 2024.

    1. As per RBI Data, India's current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to 1.2 % of GDP in Q3 of FY24 (October-December 2023).
      1. India's CAD in Q3FY24 stood at $10.5 billion, compared with $11.4 billion (1.3 % of GDP) in preceding quarter (Q2FY24).
      2. CAD was $16.8 billion (2 % of GDP) in year-ago period (Q3 of FY23).
    2. India's NTPC signed loan pact with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for USD 200 million, under JBIC's Global action for Reconciling Economic growth and Environment preservation (GREEN) initiative, to be utilized by NTPC for funding capex requirements for Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) which substantially reduces SOx emission in flue gases of thermal power stations.
    3. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) designated 3 insurers as Domestic Systemically Important Insurers (D-SIIs) for 2023-24, namely Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re), and New India Assurance Co Ltd (retaining their D-SII status from previous year).
      1. D-SIIs are insurers of significant size and market importance whose distress or failure could disrupt the domestic financial system.
      2. Likewise, RBI also maintains list of Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs), which currently includes SBI, ICICI Bank, and HDFC Bank.
    4. Noted Banker S. Raman’s autobiography titled From A Car Shed To The Corner Room & Beyond has been released. He had served as Former CMD of Canara Bank and a full-time Member of SEBI.
    5. Luis Montenegro has been appointed as new prime minister of Portugal.

    1. Stanford University Professor Teresa Meng (Taiwanese-American) has been named winner of Marconi Prize 2024, for technical and commercial contributions to all-CMOS Wi-Fi technology.
      1. Marconi Prize is an annual award recognizing achievements and advancements made in field of communications, awarded by Marconi Society. It carries monetary grant of 1 Lakh USD.
    2. Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench declared UP Board of Madarsa Education Act of 2004 as unconstitutional.
      1. Bench stated it to be in violation of principle of secularism, as well as several articles of Constitution (including Articles 14, 21, and 21-A). Additionally, court found that the act also contravened Section 22 of the University Grants Commission Act of 1956.
      2. The court, considering the large number of madarsas and madarsa students in state, directed the state government to accommodate these students in regular schools recognised under the primary, high school and intermediate education boards of the state.
      3. The ruling will affect 16513 madarsas in state recognised by the UP Board of Madarsa Education formed by the 2004 Act.
    3. Govt announced to allocate 6212 crores to Regional Rural Banks as part of the recapitalization scheme, aimed at supporting RRBs to maintain minimum prescribed capital-to-risk (Weighted) assets ratio of 9 %.
      1. RRBs are commercial banks owned by govt, operating at regional level across various states.
      2. RRBs were established in 1975 to provide basic banking and financial services to rural areas.

      2. The Knighthood is one of the highest civilian awards bestowed by the British sovereign. Foreign nationals receive it as an honorary award.

    1. European Space Agency (ESA)’s Gaia space telescope discovered 2 streams of stars in Our Milky Way Galaxy that formed and wove together over 12 billion years ago.
      1. The two streams have been named Shakti and Shiva, which helped form Milky Way, as they were likely formed before even oldest parts of our present-day galaxy’s spiral arms and disc.
    2. Mar 23 is observed as World Meteorological Day, to mark establishment of World Meteorological Organization on Mar 23, 1950. 2024 theme is At the Frontline of Climate Action.
      1. On this occasion, METOC (Meteorological and Oceanographic) seminar Meghayan-24 was conducted by School of Naval Oceanology & Meteorology (SNOM) and Indian Naval Meteorological Analysis Centre (INMAC) at Southern Naval Command.

    3. Mar 23 is Obvserved As Martyr's Day (Shaheedi Diwas) in India. It marks death anniversary of Great Freedom Fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru. They were executed on 23 March 1931, in Lahore (Pakistan).

    3. M V Rao (Central Bank of India MD & CEO) has been elected as Chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
    4. RBI issued finalised Omnibus Framework for recognising Self-Regulatory Organisations (SRO) for its Regulated Entities.
      1. Earlier in Oct 2023, a draft framework was released in this regard.
      2. The framework contains several parameters for grant of recognition, which will be common for any SRO proposed to be recognized by RBI. Other sector-specific guidelines shall be issued separately by the respective departments of RBI wherever a sectoral SRO is intended to be set up.
      3. An SRO will operate with credibility and objectivity under oversight of the regulator, to improve regulatory compliance for healthy and sustainable development of the sector to which it caters.
    5. Supreme Court formed an expert committee to address issue of urgent need to protect the endangered Great Indian Bustard population from danger caused by collisions with high-powered power cables in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

    4. Govt approved a scheme to promote India as a manufacturing destination, to enable manufactuing of e-vehicles with latest technology, by attracting investments by reputed global EV manufacturers.
      1. Notable Policy features -
        1. Minimum Investment required - 4150 Crores. No limit on maximum Investment.
        2. Timeline for manufacturing - 3 years for setting up manufacturing facilities in India, and to start commercial production of e-vehicles, and reach 50% domestic value addition within 5 years at maximum.
        3. Domestic value addition during manufacturing: A localization level of 25% by the 3rd year and 50% by the 5th year will have to be achieved.
        4. Customs duty of 15% would be applicable for 5 years.
        5. Vehicle of CIF value of USD 35,000 or above will be permissible.
        6. Number of EV allowed for import would be determined by total duty foregone or investment made, whichever is lower, subject to a maximum of 6484 Crores (equal to incentive under PLI scheme).
        7. Not more than 8000 EVs per year would be permissible for import under this scheme. The carryover of unutilized annual import limits would be permitted.
        8. Investment commitment will have to be backed up by a bank guarantee in lieu of custom duty forgone, which will be invoked in case of non-achievement of DVA and minimum investment criteria.

    1. High level Committee on Simultaneous Elections constituted under Chairmanship of Ram Nath Kovind ( former President of India) has submitted its Report to President Droupadi Murmu.

Committee was formed in Sep 2023, with Members - Amit Shah (Home Minister), Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (INC Leader), Ghulam Nabi Azad (Former J&K CM), NK Singh (Chairperson of 15th Finance Commission), Subhash C. Kashyap (former Secretary-General of Lok Sabha), Harish Salve (Former Solicitor General) and Sanjay Kothari (Former Central Vigilance Commissioner).
      2. After due consideration of all suggestions, Committee recommends a two-step approach to lead to the simultaneous elections in Country.

        3. Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand (Gujarat), will be set up by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP), with investment of 7500 crores.

    1. RBI released Annual Report of the Ombudsman Scheme for period April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.
      1. This is first full-year report after launch of Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS) in 2021, by integrating 3 erstwhile Ombudsman Schemes -Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006, Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies 2018, and Ombudsman Scheme for Digital Transactions 2019.
      2. Intiially, it included all Banks/NBFCs. Credit Information Companies (CICs) were brought under ambit of the Scheme from Sep 1, 2022.
      3. Under RB-IOS 2021 -
        1. 703544 complaints were received (increase of 68.24% over last year). Of these, Approx 33 % complaints were handled by 22 Offices of RBI Ombudsman (ORBIOs), whereas remaining were closed by Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre (CRPC) as non-complaints / non-maintainable complaints.
    2. PM Narendra Modi unveiled 125-foot bronze statue of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan in Assam's Jorhat, named Statue of Valour.
      1. Lachit Borphukan was a legendary army commander of the Ahom kingdom, known for his leadership in Battle of Saraighat (1671) that thwarted a drawn-out attempt by then mighty Mughal forces (led by Jaipur King Raja Ramsingh-I), to take back Assam.

It amends Citizenship Amendment Act 1955, making two key changes to facilitate citizenship to undocumented migrants belonging to six non-Muslim communities - Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014 .
      2. It also reduces period to qualify for citizenship from existing 11 years to 5 years.
      3. Rules mandate applicants to provide 6 types of documents, and specify date of entry in India.
    7. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) conducted simultaneous launch of Agray and Akshay, as 5th & 6th of 8 ships being built for Indian Navy, by GRSE under Project ASW Shallow Water Craft.

        1. Approved Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme 2024 (UNNATI), to stay in effect for 10 years, along with 8 years for committed liabilities, at cost 10037 crores.
          1. It was proposed by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (Ministry of Commerce and Industry), as a Central Sector Scheme.
          2. The scheme will incentize investors for setting up new units or undertaking significant expansion of existing units, in North East Region states.
          3. It will be divided into two parts. Part A caters to incentives to eligible units (9737 crores) and Part B is for implementation and institutional arrangements for scheme. (300 Crores).
          4. Features -
            1. Industrial unit will be allowed to apply for registration from the date of notification up to 31-03-2026.
            2. All applications for registration shall have to be disposed of by 31-03-2027.
            3. All eligible Industrial Units to commence their production or operation within 4 years from the grant of registration.
            4. Districts are categorized in two zones: Zone A (Industrially Advanced Districts) & Zone B (Industrially Backward Districts).
        2. Approved allocation of over 10372 crores for IndiaAI Mission, to catalyse various components of IndiaAI Mission over next 5 years.
          1. Notable components include IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC), IndiaAI Datasets Platform, IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, IndiaAI FutureSkills, IndiaAI Startup Financing, and Safe & Trusted AI.

            1. IndiaAI compute pillar will build a high-end scalable AI computing ecosystem to cater to increasing demands from India’s AI start-ups and research ecosystem.         3. Approved proposal of Ministry of Law & Justice for introduction of Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill 2024 in Parliament. Features of the bill include -
          1. It empowers Census Commissioner to ascertain and determine population of Scheduled Tribes in Goa, as per population figures of Scheduled Tribes as per Census 2001.
          2. It empowers Election Commission to make necessary amendments in Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order 2008, to give proper representation to Scheduled Tribes in Legislative Assembly of Goa
          3. Election Commission shall take into consideration revised population figures of Scheduled Tribes and readjust Legislative Assembly constituency having regard to provisions of articles 170 and 332 of Constitution and Delimitation Act 2002.
        4. Approved release of an additional instalment of Dearness Allowance (DA) to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) to pensioners w.e.f. 01-01-2024, with increase of 4% over existing rate of 46% of Basic Pay/Pension.
          1. Impact will be 12869 crore per annum, to benefit about 49.18 lakh Central Government employees and 67.95 lakh pensioners.
        5. Approved  continuation of targeted subsidy of 300 per 14.2 kg cylinder (and proportionately pro-rated for 5 kg cylinder) for up to 12 refills per year to be provided to over 10 crore beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) during FY 2024-25.
          1. It will cost Expenditure of 12000 crore for FY25 (2024-25).
      2. CCEA (Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs) approvals -
        1. Approved Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for Raw Jute for 2024-25 season, at 5335 per quintal (up from 5050 last year). 
          1. It will ensure return of 64.8 % over all India weighted average cost of production.

    4. Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog and Meta jointly launced Frontier Technology Labs (FTLs).
      1. FTLs will be set up in schools of strategic importance to ensure that students will have equal opportunities to learn and engage with frontier technologies.
      2. FTLs will be an advanced version of Atal Tinkering Labs, to empower students to innovate using technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Augmented & Virtual Reality, Blockchain, Cybersecurity, Robotics, 3D Printing, and Internet of Things.
      3. So far, AIM has established 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in schools across 722 districts in India.

          1. Core loading consists of loading of reactor control subassemblies, followed by blanket subassemblies and Fuel sub-assemblies which will generate power.
          2. India has adopted a 3-stage nuclear power program with a closed fuel cycle. In PFBR, marking 2nd stage of nuclear program, spent fuel from the first stage is reprocessed and used as fuel in FBR. A unique feature of this sodium cooled PFBR is that it can produce more fuel than it consumes, thus helping in achieving self-reliance in fuel supply.

          1. It utilises a unique 12-digit Tag ID allocated to each livestock animal. Under this, out of estimated 30.5 crore bovines, about 29.6 crore have already been tagged and their details are available in database.
          2. Also Launched 1962 Farmers App, which records all data and information present under Bharat Pashudhan database, which can be utilised by the farmers.
    3. Home Minister Amit Shah launched National Urban Co-operative Finance and Development Corporation Limited (NUCFDC), the Umbrella organization for Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) across country.
      1. NUCFDC will aim to strengthen UCB Sector in India, by ensuring specialized services to cooperative banks, facilitate communication between banks and regulators and address challenges faced by UCBs.
      2. NUCFDC has been granted Certificate by RBI to operate as a Non Banking Finance Company (NBFC). It will also be allowed to operate as a Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) for the sector.
      3. NUCFDC will also set up a platform that can be shared by all UCBs, enabling them to widen their range of services at a relatively lower cost.
      4. Presently, there are over 1500 UCBs in India with number of branches exceeding 11000 and deposit size over 5.33 lakh crores.
