It was proclaimed in 2010 at Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia where signatories declared an agreement that the governments of tiger populated counties would double the tiger population by 2022, termed as TX2. On this occcasion, results of 4th cycle of All India Tiger Estimation 2018 were announced. Key points -

  1. Count of tigers in India rose to 2967 in 2018. India achieved its 2022 target of doubling tiger population four years before deadline. Count grew from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,226 in 2014 and to 2,967 in 2018.
  2. In 2014, there were 692 protected areas, which increased to more than 860 in 2019. Community Reserves also grew from 43, in 2014, to more than 100.
  3. Top 5 States - Madhya Pradesh saw highest number at 526, followed by Karnataka (524), Uttarakhand (442), Maharashtra (312) and Tamil Nadu (264).
  4. States that saw Decline in Tiger Population - Chhattisgarh and Mizoram.
  5. Pench sanctuary (MP) and Periyar sanctuary of Kerala emerged as best managed tiger reserves in country.
  6. Dampa Reserve (Mizoram) and Rajaji reserve (Uttarakhand) with score of 42.97% and 44.53% respectively were left at bottom of ladder.
